Eugene "Sonny" Coyle, for 32 years form 1959 to 1990, served as the defensive coordinator at SD Mines. Coyle helped Coach Gary Boner achieve Tech's greatest football success in the 1970's and 1980's and coached what many observers considered the best Hardrocker defense ever in 1980. That defense set modern school records by allowing only 59 points in nine games and by recording four shutouts that season. Sonny had a positive influence on many young men, and his guidance and the example he set for everyone will never be forgotten. Coyle was highly regarded by his peers and players, and his association with Hardrocker football will live forever.
