He helped the Tech cross country team to four consecutive South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference Championships from 1970 to 1973, and to the NAIA District tile in 1973. The Hardrocker team competed in the NAIA National meet in Liberty, Missouri in 1973, and finished 23rd, the best finish ever by a Tech team. Evans claimed the SDIC Individual Championship in 1972 as a sophomore, and also captured the one-mile run at the SDIC Track & Field Championship that year. At the time of his induction, he had the 2nd best ever school time in the 1500 meter run (3:58.24), and the fifth best school time in the 800 meter run (1:55.64).
