Dave Dutton enjoyed a tremendous career at SD Mines as was recognized for his outstanding play during his senior year in 1980 when he was selected as an NAIA All-American First Teamer (defensive tackle) and MVP in the SDIC.
The 1980 Hardrocker defense, on of the greatest in SD Mines history, allowed only 59 points in nine games and recorded five shutouts that year.
A leader of the defensive unitat nose tackle, Dutton was a starter in all 38 games during his four years and was an outstanding defensive player. Coach Gary Boner said, "Dutton tackled from sideline to sideline and his greatest quality is that he always gave 110 percent.
