At the time of his induction, Jim Guthrie held the all-time Hardrocker record for rushing yards in a season of 1,314 set in 1977, and was the second all-time career rushing leader with 2,838 yards. He shared the record of most rushing yards in a game with 245 set in 1977 and shared the record for points scored in a season with 78 also in 1977. Guthrie was a member of SDIC Championship teams in 1975 and 1976, and helped SD Mines record a 21-13-2 record during his four years.

Gutherie was named to the NAIA All-American team in 1977. His Coach Gary Boner said, "Jim Guthrie is one those dedicated athletes who grace a team every so often and his unselfishness and team play speak highly for this individual. Jim's perseverance in football during his four years at Tech makes him deserving of such an award." He graduated with a degree in mining engineering in 1979.
