Roger Opp began his long career at SD Mines in 1966 as an assistant professor of mathematics. That year he also served as the official scorer for basketball games and eventually moved over to the game clock in the late 1970s and served as the Faculty Athletic Representative and also as the secretary of the SDIC for many years and is a member of the SDIC Hall of Fame.
"Service to the students, both academically and athletically was important to me," Opp said. "Seeing a student in the classroom and then on the playing field allowed me to see both sides of the educational experience."
Opp's loyalty to SD Mines and its students and athletics is a hallmark of his dedication to the university. He played a very important role as a member of the scoring table and will be remembered for the professional manner he handled the role.
