Morris attended South Dakota Mines from 1991-96. During that time he competed for the Hardrocker track and field team as well as the cross country program.

Morris is a five-time NAIA national competitor, participating in three national cross country championships (1992-94) and two national track championships (10-kilometer in 1993 and the men’s marathon in 1994). Morris is an All-American in the marathon (fourth place at Nationals) and the school record holder in that event (2 hours 29 minutes 1 second) which he set at the national championships. He is also third all-time in the 10k (32:16.86) and is the  District 12 Champion in the 10k (1993, 1994). He also holds the fifth-fastest time in the men’s 5K event (15:40.84).

In cross country, Morris was name All Conference (SDIC) 1992-1994, was the 1994 individual champ and helped the Hardrockers earn the team championship that year. He was also All-District (NAIA) 1992, 1993, 1994; and was part of the 1992 championship team.
