Nelson came to the basketball program at the School of Mines in 1993 after two years at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore. He made an immediate impact for the Hardrockers, leading the team in rebounds his first year with 216 and was SDIC All-Conference. In just two years at the School of Mines, Nelson amassed 1,283 points and 420 rebounds. In his senior year, he was an All-SDIC selection, SDIC MVP, First Team Argus All-College Team, and NAIA All-American Honorable Mention. Nelson's career stat line: 21.7 pts/game, 7.2 rbs/game, 57 percent FG, 8 percent FT.

As a post player, Nelson was extremely physical around the basket but possessed very good touch from the perimeter, which made him difficult to defend. Coach Hugh Welsh regarded Nelsonas one of the best players and individuals that he ever had the privilege to work with. He still holds the School of Mines record for most points scored in two years and is 14th on the all-time scoring list.
