Ditlev, a native of Sioux Falls, S.D., and graduate of Lincoln High School, came to SD Mines to study Metallurgical Engineering. He was a member of the school newspaper but was recruited by former football coach and athletic director Dud King and became a talented football athlete, playing for the Hardrockers from 1970-73. Ditlev remembers his times practicing and participating for the Hardrockers in the SDIC.

Some of his highlights include playing against the likes of Benny Francis who was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings and Lyle Alzado who went on to have a storied career in the NFL playing for the Broncos and Raiders. Ditlev was scouted by several NFL teams including: the Colts, Browns and Bengals but it was the Eagles that took him in the 13th round of the 1973 Draft.

Ditlev has two sons who are both SD Mines graduates --- Keld Ditlev played football and Hans Ditlev played basketball for the Hardrockers.

Ditlev currently works for Paco equipment in Seattle, Washington specializing in drilling and bridge building.
