Bill Coyle, native of Philip, began his career at the School of Mines in 1947. He was a professor of civil engineering and later became the Department Head of Civil Engineering in 1963 and served in that capacity for 18 years. He was a very active supporter of the school's athletic program and was the faculty athletic representative for many years. His guidance and interest in student athletes helped many young men through the academic rigors at the School of Mines. Many athletes often mention that if it were not for Coyle, they would not have graduated. He was an integral part in the Mines academic and athletic success.
