The last unbeaten Hardrocker football team posted an 8-0 mark in 1951 and was coached by Barney Lewellyn. During that season, Mines defeated the eventual North Dakota Conference champs Valley City State.

The quarterback of the team, Jim Smith, went on to a career in Washington, D.C. He served in the Treasury Department in the Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford administrations.
