LAS VEGAS, N.M. – South Dakota Mines Women's Basketball dropped a road contest 61-71 to New Mexico Highlands on Thursday night.
The Cowgirls outscored the Hardrockers 24-13 in the first quarter. New Mexico Highlands started the game with a 9-0 lead over the Rockers. With a 12-point lead at the 5:01 mark, the
Morning Grace Spotted Bear put up five straight points to make the score 12-19. The Cowgirls held a 24-13 lead after the first quarter.
South Dakota Mines answered in the second quarter, outscoring the Cowgirls 18-11. The Rockers started the quarter with a 7-0 run, making it a four-point game. With an eight-point deficit at the 2:50 mark, six straight Rockers points made it 31-33. New Mexico Highlands held a 35-31 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, New Mexico Highlands outscored the Rockers 22-19. The Cowgirls took a 12-point lead after starting the half with a 10-2 run. After the They held a double-digit lead until
Emma Martin landed a three-pointer with six seconds left to make the score 50-57 with one quarter left.
The Hardrockers fell 61-71 after they were outscored 14-11 in the fourth quarter.
Addison Miranda and
Lauren Herman drained two straight three-pointers make it a six-point deficit with 2:49 left. The Hardrockers were held scoreless the rest of the way as they fell 61-71.
Savea Mansfield recorded 15 points on 5-for-9 field goal shooting. Spotted Bear also put up 15 points with seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks. She was 7-for-11 from the field. Martin tallied 11 points for the Rockers.
South Dakota Mines shot 44.2% from the field, 27.3% from deep and 81.8% from the free throw line. They put up 32 points in the paint and 15 bench points.
The Rockers fell to 9-16 overall and 7-10 in the RMAC after the loss. They are tied for 10
th place in the RMAC with three games remaining.
What's Next
The Hardrockers stay on the road on Saturday to face Fort Lewis at 1 p.m. They return home next weekend for their final regular season games against Colorado Mesa and Western Colorado.
