Volleyball Wins Five Set Thriller at Colorado School of Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. – South Dakota Mines Volleyball took down Colorado School of Mines 3-2 at Lockridge Arena.

The Hardrockers won the first set 26-24 to go up 1-0 in the match. With a 12-12 tie, the Hardrockers went on a five-point run to go up 17-12. The Orediggers responded and took a 24-23 lead. South Dakota Mines recorded three straight kills to win 26-24.

Colorado School of Mines tied up the match with a 25-20 second set win. The Hardrockers led 19-18 until a six-point run gave the Orediggers a 24-19 lead. A kill gave them their 25-20 victory.

South Dakota Mines responded in the third set with a dominant 25-16 victory. The Hardrockers went out to a 17-8 lead. Both teams traded points the rest of the set as the Hardrockers took a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, the Orediggers won 25-10 over the Hardrockers. They went on a 10-point run in the middle of the set to go up 17-7. Seven straight points at the end of the set gave them a 25-10 win.

With a 2-2 tie, the match went into the fifth set. With an 8-5 lead in hand, the Hardrockers picked up four consecutive points to go up 11-5. The Orediggers responded with a 6-1 run to tie the set at 12-12. Both teams traded two points each to tie the set 14-14. Ivy Vindivich made it 15-14 and an attacking error gave the Hardrockers a 3-2 win over the Orediggers.

Joy Aburto led the match with 17 kills. She added four blocks and one dig. Vindivich recorded 12 kills and 17 digs for her second double-double of the season. Maria Bouman totaled 10 kills, four digs, two blocks and one ace. Hannah Benes was one off a career-high with 30 total digs. Hannah Joseph had a double-double with 27 assists and 20 digs for the Hardrockers.

As a team, South Dakota Mines totaled 61 kills, seven aces, nine blocks, 56 assists and 101 digs. With the win, the Hardrockers sit in ninth place in the RMAC with three matches to go. They are one game behind Westminster in eighth place.

What's Next

South Dakota Mines will host Black Hills State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. They will host Westminster on Nov. 14 followed by Senior Night on Nov. 15 against Colorado Mesa.
