DENVER, Colo. – South Dakota Mines Volleyball went 1-1 over the weekend at the RMAC Power Pod against Colorado Mesa and #12 MSU Denver.
Match 1: Hardrockers vs. Colorado Mesa, 3-0 W
South Dakota Mines swept Colorado Mesa 3-0 to begin the RMAC Power Pod on Friday.
The Hardrockers won the first set 25-20 over the Mavericks. With an 11-10 lead, the Hardrockers recorded five straight points to go up 16-10. That turned into a 21-14 lead later in the set. Colorado Mesa attempted a comeback until
Lexi Glendenning recorded two straight kills to win the set for South Dakota Mines.
In a back-and-forth second set, South Dakota Mines edged Colorado Mesa 28-26. The Hardrockers held an early three-point lead until a 6-1 Mavericks run made it 11-9. South Dakota Mines responded as they took a 20-17 lead. With a 24-23 lead, the Mavericks picked up a kill to tie the set at 24-24. Both teams traded kills until
Maria Bouman collected a kill and an ace to give the Hardrockers a 28-26 victory.
South Dakota Mines put Colorado Mesa away with a dominating 25-15 set three win. An 11-3 run midway through the set gave the Hardrockers a 19-11 edge. They carried that run to the end as they swept the Mavericks for the first time in program history.
Glendenning led the match with 13 kills. She hit for .344 with just two attacking errors.
Morgan Daugherty hit for .625 with 12 kills.
Ivy Vindivich tallied seven kills, four digs and five service aces. Bouman also had seven kills.
Hannah Benes picked up 17 digs against the Mavericks.
Hannah Joseph totaled 16 assists and seven digs, while
Louisa Battin recorded 13 assists.
As a team, the Hardrockers hit for .306 and held the Mavericks to a .163 clip. South Dakota Mines had 44 kills, 54 digs, nine aces and eight blocks.
Match 2: Hardrockers at #12 MSU Denver, 0-3 L
In their second match of the weekend, South Dakota Mines fell to #12 MSU Denver at the Auraria Event Center.
The Hardrockers kept it close in the first set but fell 23-25 to the Roadrunners. With a 9-4 lead in hand, the Roadrunners 11-4 run gave them a 15-13 lead. A 5-1 run at the end of the set guided them to a 25-23 victory.
MSU Denver won the second set 25-14 to take a 2-0 match lead. They went out to an early 11-4 lead and carried that to a 20-8 lead. South Dakota Mines tried to stage a comeback, but it was too much as the Roadrunners won 25-14.
The Roadrunners secured a 3-0 sweep with their 25-20 third set win. With a 10-7 Hardrocker lead, both teams went back-and-forth until a 6-1 Roadrunners run. The Hardrockers trailed 19-20 as MSU Denver secured the win with a 5-1 run.
Glendenning led the Hardrockers with 14 kills and .310 hitting percentage. Vindivich added six kills, seven digs and three blocks. Benes tallied 11 digs, while Joseph had 11 assists for the Hardrockers.
With the 1-1 weekend, the Hardrockers moved to 8-14 overall. Since they were non-conference matches, they remain at 5-5 in the RMAC.
What's Next
South Dakota Mines is back in action on Nov. 8 at Colorado School of Mines at 5 p.m. The Hardrockers will return home on Nov. 11 to face Black Hills State and begin a three-game homestand.
