Haugen, Weiss Named To RMAC Academic First Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball players Anna Haugen and Ryan Weiss were both named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic First Team announced Monday by the league office in Colorado Springs, Colorado, while Michaela Shaklee, Melissa Johnstone and Sami Steffeck all earned RMAC Honor Roll accolades.
 
First Team All-Academic members, were voted on by the conference's sports information directors. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must carry a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and must have been an active student at the institution for at least two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters.
 
"Extremely proud of both Anna and Ryan for this achievement, they are truly scholar-athletes and are more than deserving of this recognition for all the hard work they put in every day," said Hardrocker women's basketball head coach Jeri Jacobson. "We have an extremely intelligent team, and as a coach, these are the accomplishments I am most proud of."
 
Weiss is a redshirt sophomore guard from Ames, Iowa, majoring in Industrial Engineering with a 3.712 GPA. Weiss leads the Hardrockers in scoring this season and is fourth in the RMAC averaging 16.4 points per game. She also leads the team and the RMAC in three-pointers made (64).
 
Haugen is a forward from Fort Collins, Colorado, and graduated in December with a degree in Applied Biological Sciences with a 3.61 GPA. She is currently working on her master's degree in Biomedical Engineering. The 5-11 senior is having a stellar final season and is second on the team averaging 10.9 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. She has nine double-double on the season and ranks second in the RMAC for rebounds per game and third in defensive rebounds per game (6.7). Haugen was named to the RMAC Honor Roll the previous two season and earned All-RMAC Second Team honors last year.
 
To earn a spot on the RMAC Honor Roll, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) and must have been an active student at the institution for at least two consecutive semesters.
 
Shaklee is a junior guard from Arvada, Colorado, majoring in Applied Biological Sciences with a 3.714 GPA; Sami Steffeck is a junior guard from Fort Collins, Colorado, majoring in Industrial Engineering with a 3.542 GPA; and Melissa Johnston is a sophomore from Flower Mound, Texas, majoring in Chemical Engineering with a 3.580 GPA.

"It takes a lot of hard work to achieve in the classroom at South Dakota Mines and to add in the amount of work these ladies put in on the court in addition to the classroom—is so impressive. Anna, Ryan, Sami, Shak (Michaela) and Melissa are high-achieving workers and I am so proud of them for their dedication in the classroom and to our team."
