RAPID CITY, S.D. ---The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team will hit the road this weekend for two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchups challenging New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Friday evening at 5 p.m. and then head to Pueblo, Colorado for a rematch with the Lady Thunderwolves Saturday. This is the second time in two weeks that these programs have met this season.
The Cowgirls lost twice at home last week, falling to UC Colorado Springs 80-47 on Friday and Colorado School of Mines 69-38 on Saturday.
DeAvion Allen and
Allyah George led NMHU with 13 points apiece against UCCS while George led the Cowgirls with 13 points while
Jordyn Lewis added 12 against the Orediggers.
NMHU dropped both games on their road trip to take on South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State two weeks ago - falling at the Hardrockers 73-35 on Jan. 26 (
Kish Chandler led the team with 12) while losing to the Yellow Jackets 83-64 on Jan. 25 (Lewis led the Cowgirls with 25 points).
Saturday, the Lady 'Rockers will get a good test against CSU-Pueblo. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
The Pack has an overall record of 11-10 on the season and an RMAC record of 9-6 putting them in 6
th place in the standings. These two teams met two weeks ago.
CSU Pueblo have won three of their last five. Their three wins came against Chadron State (68-67), SD Mines (56-39), and Black Hills State (68-54). They have however lost their last two to Colorado School of Mines (66-47) and University of Colorado Colorado Springs (67-59).
Jennah Knaflec leads the T-Wolves with 14.3 points per game and has tallied 44 steals so far this season. Khiya Adams follows with 12.5 points per game, and she leads the team with 151 rebounds.
The Hardrockers split a pair of games last weekend, falling at Goodell Gymnasium to MSU Denver, 73-34 on Friday, but then bounced back nicely against Chadron State (60-45) on Saturday. In the loss to MSU Denver, South Dakota Mines struggled from the field (31.7) with
Sami Steffeck and
Melissa Johnstone leading the team with eight points apiece. In the win against Chadron State, the Hardrockers used a big second half - outscoring the Eagles 38-25 - to pull away with
Taylor Molstad leading the team with 15 points while Steffeck had 14.
Molstad leads the team in scoring (11.5) and assists (2.5) while also averaging 4.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals. Steffeck is also averaging double figures at 10.3 points per game while leading the team with 1.8 steals per game.
Anna Haugen, this week's RMAC WBB Defensive Player of The Week, leads the team in rebounding at 8.3 per game to go along with 7.3 points per contest.
