RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team will be back home in Goodell Gymnasium this weekend for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup as the Hardrocker women welcome in Fort Lewis College Friday and Adams State on Saturday.
The Hardrockers netted their first conference win over the weekend, defeating Dixie State, 70-68, in overtime on Friday and then put a scare into No. 18 Westminster College before the Griffins fended SD Mines off, 70-57.
SD Mines is 2-4 on the season and 1-2 in the RMAC. As a team the 'Rockers are scoring 62.7 points per game and giving up 63.5. They are shooting 40 percent from the field, and have made good on 146-363 three-point goals this season.
Individually,
Ryan Weiss leads the offense averaging 16.0 ppg while
Anna Haugen is averaging a double-double with 10.3 ppg and 12.5 rpg.
This past weekend, Haugen of South Dakota Mines had a season high 19 rebounds vs. Dixie State and tallied 22 on the weekend. It is the second most rebounds in-a-game of her career. Haugen is second in the conference with 75 total rebounds and is first in rebounds per game at 12.5 (ranks fourth in the NCAA) and first in defensive rebounds per game at 9.2 (fourth in the NCAA). Haugen also leads the conference in double-doubles (4); and is second in the conference in offensive rebounds.
Haugen moved into 10
th place for career rebounds (737) while
Sami Steffeck notched 199 career three-point goals made after tallying seven over the weekend. Steffeck, who is averaging 8.8 ppg, needs just two more from downtown to becoming the all-time three-pointers made record holder. The current record is held by Hillary Hawkins (2009-13) who owns the title with 200.
Fort Lewis (6-1, 2-0 RMAC) opened conference play with two wins as they defeated New Mexico Highlands (1-6, 0-2 RMAC) and CSU-Pueblo (2-5, 1-1 RMAC). Against the Cowgirls, the Skyhawks were all over the boards as they collected 20 more rebounds than New Mexico Highlands including a 22-8 margin on the offensive glass. Those offensive rebounds allowed Fort Lewis to score 16 second-chance points. The next game against the Thunderwolves, FLC's inside presence was still dwelling as the Skyhawks outrebounded CSU-Pueblo by a count of 47-38. Once they got their inside attack rolling, Fort Lewis kicked the ball out to beyond the arc as the shot 42.9 percent from the three-point line.
FLC's Jordan Carter led the Skyhawks in scoring in their two wins this past weekend as she posted her first double-double of the season on Friday with 13 points and 12 rebounds against the Cowgirls. She backed it up with a 15-point, nine-rebound performance against the Thunderwolves, helping FLC snap a 12-game losing streak to CSU-Pueblo.
Teammate Kayla Herrera-Flores finished with nine points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots from the shooting guard position. She added 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal in Saturday's win over CSU-Pueblo.
As a team, the Skyhawks are scoring 75.3 ppg and have a stifling defense that only allows 55.7 ppg. Carter and Jordan Vasquez lead the offense as both are averaging 10. 4 ppg while Sydney Candelaria and Herrera-Flores both contribute with just over nine points a game.

Adams State has had a little tougher go of it this season with a 1-7 overall record, and a 1-1 mark in the conference. The Grizzlies defeated New Mexico Highlands, 57-45, this past Saturday to earn their lone RMAC and season victory.
ASU has had a bit of trouble getting its offense going, averaging just 45.1 points per game while the defense allows 67.6 each night.
Laura Gutierrez leads the offense with 9.4 ppg while teammate Zakiya Beckles contributes with 8.4 ppg. Makaela Ewing, Paiton Demps and Marshell Hollins crash the boards pretty hard for the Grizzlies and each is hauling in over four rebounds per game.
