RAPID CITY, S.D. --- After picking up a convincing win to open the season, the South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team hit the road this weekend for a quick trip to Montana to challenge the MSU Billings Yellowjackets Saturday night in a 5 p.m. (MDT) tipoff.
The Hardrockers head into Saturday with a 1-0 record after defeating Waldorf University, 60-52, last Saturday in Rapid City in their home and season opener.
MSU Billings on the other hand has four games under its belt, but have not made an entry in the 'W' column. Most recently, the Yellowjackets fell to Black Hills State this past Wednesday, 60-42.
The Yellowjackets are averaging 54.3 points per game and are shooting 34 percent on the season.
Sophomore
Taryn Shelley was a pre-season all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference selection and has lived up to the billing so far. Shelley leads the team with 16.0 points per game along with 8.3 rebounds.
Junior guard
Hannah Collins is largely responsible for running the Yellowjacket offense. The Great Falls guard ranks second on the squad in points per game (10.3) and 3-pointers (4-for-11, .364).
SD Mines shot 42 percent from the field and had a balanced attack offensively last week against Waldorf.
Sami Steffeck scored a team best 13 points while
Anna Haugen notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Last season, the Yellowjackets fell 88-69 in South Dakota.
Molly McCabe posted 19 points for the Hardrockers. MSUB will likely need to improve their 37-percent shooting percentage to defeat South Dakota Mines on Saturday.
