SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – South Dakota Mines Women's Basketball dropped a road contest to Westminster 61-77 at Behnken Field House.
Westminster outscored South Dakota Mines 13-10 in the first quarter. The Griffins took an early 10-4 lead over the Hardrockers. Over the next four minutes, the Hardrockers went on a run to tie the game at 10-10. Ellie Mitchell landed a three-pointer to give the Griffins a 13-10 lead.
In the second quarter, the Griffins won 15-14 over the Hardrockers. With a 17-20 deficit,
Emma Martin made a three-pointer and
Morning Grace Spotted Bear put in a layup to give the Hardrockers a 22-20 lead. A 5-0 run at the end of the quarter gave the Griffins a 28-24 lead at halftime.
Westminster had a third quarter to remember, outscoring South Dakota Mines 34-21. The Griffins recorded a 10-0 run to go up 43-31. That would be extended to a 17-point lead with 2:52 left. Westminster held a 62-45 lead at the end of the quarter.
A 16-15 fourth quarter for the Hardrockers was not enough, falling 61-77 to the Griffins. Martin made it a 61-73 game with 3:01 left in the game. However, South Dakota Mines was held scoreless for the rest of the game to lose 61-77.
Spotted Bear led the team with 16 points on 7-for-12 field goal shooting. She totaled five steals, four rebounds and two blocks. Martin also had 16 points with seven shots made on 14 attempts. Martin recorded five rebounds, three steals and three assists.
Addison Miranda picked up 12 points on four three-pointers made.
The Hardrockers shot 41.1% from the field, 30% from beyond the arc and 69.2% from the free throw line. They recorded 32 points in the paint and 20 bench points.
South Dakota Mines dropped to 6-12 overall and 4-6 in the RMAC after the loss.
What's Next
The Hardrockers return home on Jan. 29 to face Chadron State at 5:30 p.m. After that game, they will go on the road for three straight games, starting at Black Hills State on Jan. 31 at 4 p.m.
