GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – South Dakota Mines Football dropped a road contest at Colorado Mesa 12-38 on Saturday afternoon.
South Dakota Mines was on the board in the first quarter. After the defense forced a three and out, the Hardrockers started a drive from their own 20 yard line. After a 25 yard catch from
Jacoby Ogbonna and a face mask penalty, South Dakota Mines was in field goal range.
Bryson Patten made a 42 yard field goal to give the Hardrockers a 3-0 lead. They held that lead to the end of the quarter.
The Mavericks tied the game early in the second quarter with a field goal. They went on a nine minute touchdown drive to go up 10-3 with 1:45 left in the first half. Colorado Mesa recorded another touchdown at the end of the quarter as they went into halftime with a 17-3 lead.
In the middle of the third quarter, Patten nailed a 40 yard field goal to make the score 6-17. Colorado Mesa responded with another touchdown, giving them a 24-6 lead after three quarters.
Another Mavericks touchdown made the score 31-6 with 6:31 left in the game. The Hardrockers offense got a touchdown back late in the fourth quarter.
Gage Bohannon caught two passes and
Mason Galbreath grabbed one to put the Hardrockers inside the 20 yard line. Ogbonna caught a 17 yard touchdown from
Gage Baker to make the score 12-31. Colorado Mesa added a touchdown at the end of the game.
Baker was 20-for-34 with 187 yards and one touchdown in the air. He also ran for 27 yards. Ogbonna caught four passes for 48 yards and one touchdown. Galbreath recorded 47 yards and
Ty Harris caught a pass for 43 yards.
Charlie Johnson led the defense with 12 total tackles. He recorded six solo tackles and six assisted tackles.
Will Lester totaled 11 tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss.
Lane Thomas had three pass breakups. Patten made two field goals and punted for a long of 55 yards.
With the loss, South Dakota Mines moved to 2-8 overall and 2-6 in the RMAC.
What's Next
The Hardrockers will come back home to face Adams State on Nov. 15 at 12 p.m. They will celebrate Senior Day and Native American Heritage against the Grizzlies.
