RAPID CITY, S.D. – The South Dakota Mines men's and women's track and field teams opened the two-day USD Early Bird Open in Vermillion Friday with some strong performances.
The Hardrockers finished with a pair of top-three finishes and four other top-10 finishes.
Sophomore
Alana Howard led the way as she finished in second place in the women's 10,000-meter run in 39 minutes, 45.69 seconds, which was a personal best and third all-time for the Hardrockers.
Fifth year student
Jaycie Stubbs was third in the women's javelin with a best throw of 39.58 meters (129-feet, 10 inches).
For the Hardrocker men, junior
Hunter Prather was sixth in the 10,000-meter run in 33:29.39, which was a personal best, while teammate sophomore
Timothy Wolfe was ninth in the same event in 33:54.77.
Junior
Owen Hansmann finished in ninth place in the 1,500-meter run in 4:00.49, a personal best that puts him in sixth place all-time in Hardrocker history, while freshman
Ty Brady was 10
th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a personal best 9:59.07.
The second day of competition begins at 8 a.m. MT Saturday with the combined events (men's decathlon, women's heptathlon), with the field events at 8:30 a.m. and the running events at 10:45 a.m.
