Hardrocker Track Opens Outdoor Season, Stubbs Picks Up Victory

RAPID CITY, S.D. -- The South Dakota Mines men's and women's track teams were able to get the outdoor season underway at the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Invite in Pueblo, Colo., despite a late-week snowstorm that hit the area.

The originally scheduled two-day invitational was reduced to just Saturday and the Hardrockers came away with a school record, one individual win, one relay first-place finish and several other top five results.

Clare Fischer set a school record in the 10K, finishing in a time of 38:50.2. Jaycie Stubbs led the way by winning the women's javelin at 41.35 meters (135 feet, 7 ¾ inches) and performing well in the shot put, where she finished fourth at 13.12 meters (43-0 ½). She was also fifth in the discus at 38.48m (126-2 ¼). 

Other top-five finishes for the Hardrocker women saw the 4X400 relay A team of junior Melissa May, senior Abbie Saline, junior Katie Magni and sophomore Laine Mannes finish third in 4 minutes, 26.04 seconds, with the B team of senior Adeline Wilson, freshman Josie Byrne, sophomore Madalyn McQuistan and junior Abby Krumpus in fourth place at 4:54.10.

Freshman Teagan Wright placed fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 13:51.88.

For the South Dakota Mines men, the 4X100 relay team of sophomore Eddie Johnson, senior Taegen Wells, freshman Landon Ptacek and freshman Lane Thomas finished first in 43.25.

The Hardrocker 4X400 relay A team of freshman Cole Dobberstein, freshman Merek Ranstrom, sophomore Thomas Greisen and junior Ethan Pitlick finished in second place in 3:33.69, with the B team of freshman Ty Brady, junior Owen Hansmann, junior Carson Mashlan and sophomore Rowan Winter in fourth in 3:40.35 and the C team of senior Zach Hentschel, junior Justin Quammen, freshman Dante Cabrera and freshman Tanner Reinert taking fifth in 3:45.81.

Dobberstein finished third in the 400 hurdles in 55.83 and freshman Tristan Enders was third in the 5,000-meter run in 15:34.37, which puts him in 10th place in the South Dakota Mines all-time list.
 
Junior Isaiah Thurman also finished in third place in the hammer throw at 52.32 meters (171-7 ¾), which puts him in fourth place on the top 10 marks, with senior Reid Kaiser in fifth place at 52.01m (170-7 ½), now sixth in the top 10.

Wells placed fifth in the 110 hurdles in 15.35 and freshman Weston Pierce was fifth in the long jump at 6.22m (20-4 ¾). Senior Brent Snyder placed fifth in the javelin at 47.11m (154-6 ½) and freshman Trevor Fredenburg was fifth in the high jump at 1.77m (5-9 ½).
