Two Women's Golfers Earn Prestigious Academic Honor

Lexington, Ky. --- A pair of golfers on the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology women's golf team were named to the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar team announced recently.  Jessalyn Shipp and Rianna Garland earned the prestigious honor.
 
Shipp completed her collegiate career playing in a school record 59 rounds from 2019-2023. In 2022-23, Shipp competed six times, finishing in the top 10 once and the top 30 two additional times.
 
Garland participated in 8 tournaments and had one of the best seasons in school history, becoming the first female golfer to earn First Team All-RMAC along with setting several season school records and sitting near the top throughout the career leaderboard. In the impressive season, Garland recorded two individual wins, a second-place finish, another top 10, and two more top-24 finishes. She became the fourth female golfer in school history to finish in the top-10 at the RMAC Championships.
 
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50.
 
Shipp graduated with a biomedical engineering degree and is now working on obtaining a master's degree at a different institution. Garland is heading into her senior year and is from Mesa, Arizona. She is a chemical engineering major. Both women also were honored with this award following the 2021-22 academic year.
