COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The South Dakota Mines women's basketball team opened RMAC play on the road Friday night against the University of Colorado Colorado Springs at the Gallogy Events Center.
It was a tough night for the Hardrockers as the hot-shooting Mountain Lions rolled to an 80-43 win.
How It Happened
UCCS led from the start, although the Hardrockers hung tough in the first quarter. UCCS led 15-7 before the Hardrockers closed strong with six straight points. Naomi Hildago hit a pair of free throws late to close the gap at 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Piper Bauer scored five points and Hildago added four in the opening frame.
UCCS, however, took advantage of several Hardrocker turnovers in the second period and turned those mistakes into baskets, outscoring South Dakota Mines 24-7 for a 41-22 halftime lead. The Mountain Lions were red-hot from beyond the 3-point arc, hitting 7-of-12 3-pointers in the first half and 13-of-24 in the game.
The Mountain Lions poured it on in the third quarter with 10 straight points, leading by as much as 29 before the Hardrockers finally were able to score. Between the second and third quarters, South Dakota Mines went over 10 minutes without scoring.
Lily Peterson ended the drought with a pair of free throws with 4:17 to play in the third. The Hardrockers would close strong on a pair of 3-pointers by
Piper Bauer and eight points, but UCCS took a 58-34 lead into the fourth period.
UCCS continued to shoot well from the outside, hitting four 3-pointers and 16 straight points to open the fourth for a 40-point lead.
Lily Peterson broke the scoring drought with 3:17 remaining on a running floater.
Savea Mansfield scored six late points to cut the final score to 80-43.
