Hardrocker Women's Basketball Fights, but Unable to Knock off Yellow Jackets

SPEARFISH, S.D. --- On Tuesday night, South Dakota Mines went up to Spearfish, to take on the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets. In a tight contest, the Hardrockers were not able to emerge with a victory, falling 52-46.
 
How it Happened – Early in the game, the offenses started slow, but Savea Mansfield gave the Hardrockers a 5-4 lead with just over five minutes to go. Moments later, Piper Bauer would hit one from the top of the key. Bauer would hit another runner, opening up an early, 10-4 lead heading into the media timeout. The Hardrockers would continue to hold a lead, ending the first, up, 15-12.
 
To begin the second quarter, Black Hills State would outscore the 'Rockers, taking a 24-17 lead. The Hardrockers would cut the deficit, however, trailing 27-24. To close the half, Black Hills State led 30-24.
 
Early in the third, the two teams would continue to battle, but two free throws by Madelyn Heiser were followed by a Mansfield layup, cutting the Yellow Jacket lead to 2, 32-30. The Yellow Jackets would immediately answer with a Nikki Van Wyk three and a steal, expanding the lead back up to six. At the media timeout, the Hardrockers trailed, 36-32. After three, the Yellow Jackets held a 39-34 lead.
 
With 6:50 to play, the Yellow Jackets got back to back threes from Van Wyk, expanding their lead to 45-36. The Hardrockers would continue to fight, but each time, the Yellow Jackets would hit a three. This time, it was Danica Kocer, expanding the BHSU lead from four to seven, 50-43. Lauren Herman hit a late three-pointer, but it wouldn't be enough as South Dakota Mines fell, 52-46.
 
Notes – Piper Bauer led the team, scoring 15 points…Lauren Herman recorded 10 rebounds…Sydnee Durtsche dished four assists.
 
Up Next – The Hardrockers face off with Chadron State on Saturday night at 5:30 p.m.
