School Record Falls in 10K for Hardrockers in Day 1 in Spearfish

SPEARFISH, S.D. --- The South Dakota Mines track and field teams competed in Day 1 of 2 at the Yellow Jacket Spring Open Friday night.

It was not an eventful day as the only events going were the Decathlon (100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m) men's and women's hammer throw and the men's and women's 10K.

Despite the limited number of events, the Hardrockers had success.

Aidan Thompson and Travis Kleinsasser both performed well in the decathlon. In the shot put portion of the decathlon Thompson finished in a tie for 1st with a Division 1 athlete from North Dakota State, throwing 12.74m (41-09.75). Thompson added a 4th place finish in the high jump (1.77m, 5-09.75) and 5th in the 400m (53.38). Kleinsasser's best events were the 100m (4th, 11.37), shot put (4th, 11.69m/38-04.25), and 400m (3rd, 51.80).

In the men's hammer throw, Warren Minerich finished 4th with a throw of 50.43m (165-05). On the women's side, both Macy McClure and Jenna Sayler notched top-5 finishes, finishing 2nd and 4th with throws of 50.62m, and 47.42m.

In the men's 10K Ryan Moen and Tim Dunham passed the previous #1 spot in school history with Moen taking the new #1 spot and Dunham sliding it right behind him with times of 31:21.57 and 31:30.69.

In the women's 10K Alyssa Franke and Margaret Thompson ran times of 41:23.30, and 41:56.69.

The Hardrockers are back at it for day 2 tomorrow morning with the Heptathlon finishing up first, starting at 9:15 a.m. followed by field events at noon and running events at 1:30.
