Women's Basketball Unable to Extend Winning Streak

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota Mines women's basketball team got 26 from Ryan Weiss and played three competitive quarters but it wasn't enough to keep the winning streak going.

In the first quarter, South Dakota Mines played well, the two teams were battling back and forth throughout, but the Hardrockers would get out to an advantage after a 6-0 run thanks to 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions by Ryan Weiss and Bailey Johnson. Later, another 3 by Weiss gave the Hardrockers a 5-point lead, 22-17. With under a minute to go Weiss would score again, giving her 13 in the quarter, and push the Hardrockers to a 24-22 lead going into the second.

For much of the second quarter, the two teams would continue battling, but Westminster would take the lead going into halftime after a 9-2 run to end the second.

Early in the third Weiss would get it going again, scoring 5 early points and finding Jansi Merz for a layup that cut the Griffins lead to 43-41. From there, Westminster would go on an 11-0 run to take a double-digit, 54-41 lead and take control of the quarter and the game. Going into the fourth, South Dakota Mines trailed 63-52.

Weiss hit another three early in the fourth after a layup from Johnson to briefly cut the deficit to 6, but that would be as close as the Hardrockers would get. Westminster got great play out of Ashley Greenwood to push the lead back to double-digits and eventually pull the game out, 76-60.
