Volleyball Falls After Battling Colorado Mesa

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota Mines volleyball team fought and were victorious in set 1 and pushed it to extra points in set four but, ultimately fell to the 19th ranked Mavericks of Colorado Mesa.
 
How It Happened - In the first set the points went back and forth to start until the Hardrockers started to take over. They won three straight points, then five straight points. Dejah Behrend had three kills during this stretch. The Hardrockers would keep the momentum going, taking an 18-9 lead before closing out the set, 25-17.
 
The second and third sets were won by Colorado Mesa, who were able to get out to a lead midway through the second, taking it 25-17. The Third was more of a battle with the Hardrockers taking it at 15 but the Mavericks would hold on 25-20.
 
The fourth set was a battle. After the Mavericks took early control, the Hardrockers would fight back, scoring four of five points, with two kills coming from Paisley Gibson to earn set point twice, but it would not be enough as the Mavericks would take the set 27-25, winning the match 3-1.
 
Notes – Koethe and Gibson each recorded 13 kills for the Hardrockers…Koethe added five blocks…Gibson recorded her first double-double, adding 11 digs…Kiley Metzger recorded 40 assists to lead the way.
 
Up Next - The Hardrockers are now 6-12 overall and 3-67 in the RMAC. The Hardrockers welcome in Fort Lewis and Western Colorado for a pair of home matchups next Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
