Hopkins Sets School Record During Multi Event At BHSU

South Dakota Mines freshman Johnathan Hopkins kicked off the 2021 Indoor Track and Field Season on a high note winning the Men's Heptathlon Saturday during the Myrle Hanson Invite at Black Hills State in Spearfish, South Dakota, and set a new school record in the process.

The Taft, California native scored 4415 points to win event – which consists of the 60-meter dash, the shot put, the long jump, the high jump, the 60 high hurdles, the pole vault and the 1000 run.

Hopkins placed first in the long jump (6.48-meters), second in the 60 dash (7.34), fourth in the shot put (10.17), third in the high jump (1.73), first in the 60 hurdles (8.74), first in the pole vault (4.55), and fifth in the 1,000 (3:41.87).

"I was pleasantly surprised by his performance these past two days," said Hardrocker assistant track coach Gillian Urycki. "A freshman coming into their first meet and setting a school record is a great accomplishment. I'm very excited by his long-term potential."

The old school indoor record was held by Brad Ware, who set it in 2016 with 4,304 point.
