5 Earn NABC Scholar Athlete Honors; Hardrockers Get Team Excellence Award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball program had five scholar athletes named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) 2019-20 Honors Court announced Thursday from the league office in Kansas City, Missouri.

Seniors Logan Elers, Jack Fiddler, Troy Brady, Trey Smith and junior Mitchell Sueker were all named to the Honors Court for their scholastic efforts of this past season.

"Earning awards like this caps off how successful our season was," said Hardrocker men's basketball head coach Eric Glenn. "We accomplished some great things in competition – from a winning record to making the post season and advancing to the RMAC semifinals. Adding these academic accolades shows how great the type of men we have in our program."

A scholar-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. To earn this award: Academically must be a junior or senior and a varsity player; have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2019-20 academic year; students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution; and must be a member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.

The Hardrockers also earned Team Academic Excellence honors an award that recognize outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better for the 2019-20 season. In order to earn the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA must count the grade point averages of all men's student-athletes who competed during the 2019-20 season.

South Dakota Mines closed out the year with a Team GPA of 3.169.

"The coaching staff is extremely happy for our guys," Glenn said. "This year was an unusual situation and to be able to handle the switch to online classes during the hardest part of the semester is a testament to the resiliency of our players."
