RAPID CIY, S.D. -- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team ran into a red-hot shooting Fort Lewis College opponent Friday night during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup at the King Center in Rapid City.
After falling behind by as much as 21 points in the first half, the Hardrockers mounted a rally and whittled their deficit down to six points toward the end of the third before the Skyhawks were able to regroup and stave off SD Mines down the stretch. FLC escaped with a 61-54 win.
The Skyhawks outscored the home team, 34-18, in the first half, but the Hardrockers posted 19 markers in the third quarter to 14 by Fort Lewis College and went into the fourth quarter down by 11, 48-37. SD Mines outscored the visitors, 17-13, in the final frame, but couldn't catch the Skyhawks down the stretch.
Despite the loss, a milestone was set as SD Mines senior
Sami Steffeck notched two three pointers on the night - which put her at 201 for her Hardrocker career and was the magic number needed to own the all-time SD Mines thee-pointers record. The old record of 200 was helped by Hillary Hawkins.
SD Mines finished the night making good on 19-54 from the field to shoot35.2 percent while Fort Lewis shot 39.7 percent from the field making good on 27-68 attempts.
Sydney Leeper paced the 'Rocker offense with 11 points, while
Ryan Weiss and
Anna Haugen both contributed with 10 points each and
Cooper Courtney added eight points on the night.
