SD Mines Volleyball Stumbles On 2nd Day In Texas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team could not right the ship Saturday during the second day of the Angelo State volleyball tournament in San Angelo, Texas, as the Hardrockers dropped matches to Tarleton State and St. Mary's University.

In the first contest of the day, Tarleton State was very solid defeating the Hardrockers, 3-0. The Texanns defeated the Lady 'Rockers, 25-11, 25-22, 25-16.

"Tarleton certainly posed challenges," said Hardrocker volleyball head coach Doug Tabbert. "They have two big arms on the left, a talented setter and they challenged us with the serving game. We got hurt by all of those things at the start of the match and got in a hole early."

SD Mines totaled 23 kills in the match and went 82-92 on the attack with 21 assists while recording 41 digs and had four total blocks. Tarleton was 90-105 on the attack with 40 kills, 39 assists and came up with 52 digs and five blocks.

"We really turned things on them in the second set and played much better," Tabbert said. "Unfortunately, we let it slip away at the end. Set 3 was competitive but we couldn't keep up with them."

Individually for SD Mines, sophomore Anna Breidt went 19-21 on the attack and notched nine kills while junior Emily Newton tallied seven kills and was 10-11 on the attack. Freshman Allie Boggs put up 19 assists and fellow freshman Allie Brown paced the Hardrockers with 15 digs.

"We got great play from Emily and Anna in the middle – both of them were very solid. Now we just need to find more balance," Tabbert added.

SD Mines closed out the tournament against St. Mary's coming up on the short end, 3-0. The Rattlers defeated the Hardrockers, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22.

"It was a tough way to end the day," Tabbert said. "They were more physical than we anticipated and we couldn't match them in that aspect. I think we wore down a bit which isn't surprising when you play as many inexperienced players as we are utilizing."

SD Mines finished the match with 32 kills and was 94-115 on the attack with 28 assists and recorded 41 digs. St. Mary's was 83-105 on the attack with 41 kills and had 38 assists, 50 digs and 10 total blocks.

Freshman Caryn Hazard led the match with seven kills and was 16-18 on the attack for the Hardrockers. Sophomore Darla Drenckhahn and Breidt contributed with six kills each. Boggs tacked on 13 assists and freshman Makinze Maiden and Hazard both had seven digs.

"There are plenty of things for us to learn from this weekend so our challenge is to do that as we move forward," Tabbert said. "We'll get some rest and then get back to work preparing for next weekend."

With the first weekend in the books, SD Mines falls to 0-4 on the season and will be back to action next weekend at the University of Sioux Falls Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Hardrockers are scheduled to face William Jewell College, Bemiji State, University-Crookston and USF.
