SD Mines Netters Fall Short Against CSU-Pueblo

Box Score

Colorado State University–Pueblo rolled past the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology a three-set sweep (25-21, 25-17, 27-25) on Saturday.

The two teams traded points early in the first set until a 6-1 run put the Thunderwolves up 13-8, eventually leading to the set win.

The Hardrockers appeared to be in control in the second set after a seven-point run put them up 12-5. Down 15-7, Pueblo responded with a 10-point run, which then ballooned to a 17-2 run.

"This was night and day from last night. We did a number of things very well. We hit .429 in the first set, which is outstanding," said Hardrocker volleyball head coach Doug Tabbert. "Midway through the second set we were still hitting .442. As a coach you can't ask for more than that."

In the third frame, the Thunderwolves would build a nine-point lead, eyeing a sweep with a 22-13 lead. However, the Hardrockers would not go down without a fight and eventually tied the set at 24 apiece. Mines was unable to get over the hump as the Thunderwolves completed the three set sweep.

Allie Boggs paced the Hardrockers with 24 assists, while Emily Newton and Kenzie Devries finished with 10 kills apiece. Makinze Maiden led the team in digs with 11 and Darla Drenckhahn chipped in with 10.

Our youth and inexperience showed down the stretch in the second set, and that is something we will continue to have to work through.  Great effort to come back like we did and compete extremely well in the third set.  It showed a lot of competitiveness on the part of our squad," Tabbert said. "The key now is how we start off next week--do we have a solid practice on Monday and play well on Tuesday or do we backtrack? That will be the test for us. One thing very encouraging about today was our offensive production. We outhit a senior-heavy team in all 3 sets. Anna hits .600, Emily and Kenzie hit .333, and Caryn hits .385. That's pretty good stuff.

The Hardrockers (1-12) will play at Dickinson State on Tuesday.
