SD Mines Netters Come Up Short At USF Tourney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team came up on the short end during the second day of the University of Sioux Falls Volleyball Tournament, falling to Bemidji State, 3-1, during the first match of the day and then losing to the host team, USF, 3-0, to close out the tournament.

Bemidji State defeated the Lady Hardrockers, 19-25, 25-10, 25-16, 25-15.

"We got off to a great start. We played the first set just like we wanted to," said Hardrocker volleyball head coach Doug Tabbert. "We challenged them with our serving game, we attacked pretty physically, and we played as good of defense as we have in a while."

SD Mines finished the match with 37 kills and was 92-108 on the attack with 37 assists, 19 digs and 12 blocks. BSU tallied 47 kills and went 98-110 on the attack while collecting 45 assists, 46 digs and 18 blocks.

"They kind of flipped the script on us in the second set," Tabbert said. "They upped their serving game and their defense to some extent. More significantly, they upped their offensive game. Unfortunately, we didn't handle the situation well and never really gained momentum for an extended stretch the rest of the match."

Hardrocker freshman Caryn Devries paced her team with 11 attacks and was 23-29 on the attack and collected four digs. Freshman Allie Boggs earned 25 assists and freshman Allie Brown led the team with 18 digs.

"Every match is a learning opportunity and we need to learn about consistency of effort and composure from this one."

During the final match of the tournament, the USF Cougars downed SD Mines, 25-13, 25-13, 25-14.

"Sioux Falls is a tough matchup for us. They have a lot of experience on the floor and they play very physical," Tabbert said. "In reality, we were in every set for a while, but they were a lot to hang with over the long haul."

The Hardrockers finished with 19 kills and went 62-77 on the attack while notching 18 assists, 22 digs and 12 blocks. The Cougars totaled 46 kills and went 74-86 on the attack and collected 42 assists, 37 digs and 17 blocks.

Hazard again led SD Mines with six kills and was 14-16 on the attack. Boggs put up 15 assists and freshman Makinze Maiden added four digs.
"We saw some growth in our squad during this match and our challenge is to build on that growth moving forward," Tabbert added.

Tournament play has ended for SD Mines on the schedule as the Hardrockers return home Tuesday to face Dickinson State in a 7 p.m. match and then open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Friday against Fort Lewis and Adams State on Saturday.
