Box Score RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team had a very competitive match Friday night as the Hardrockers played host to their rivals just over the border –Chadron State College in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup. Despite a much improved offensive effort from the home squad, the Eagles were able to come into Goodell Gymnasium and steal a win, 3-1.
The CSC Eagles defeated SD Mines, 25-22, 20-25, 25-14, 25-23. SD Mines finished the match with 47 kills and was 116-136 on the attack while collecting 46 assists, 53 digs and five total blocks. The Eagles notched 50 kills and was 110-132 on the attack with 49 assists, 62 digs and eight total blocks.
"I can't fault our effort—we were very game tonight," said Hardrocker volleyball head coach
Doug Tabbert. "If we make a couple more routine plays in the first and fourth sets, it might be a different outcome. Offensively we held our own and our serve receive held up pretty well most of the match. We still need more balance in our attack, so we need to work harder for that."
Individually for the Hardrockers, sophomore
Anna Breidt had a good outing with 14 kills and was 22-28 on the attack while junior
Emily Newton and freshman
Caryn Hazard both tallied 10 kills. Sophomore
Elizabeth Jensen gave great effort from the setter position, collection 23 assists while freshman
Allie Boggs notched 18. Freshman
Allie Brown came up with 16 digs and Hazard contributed with 12.
"At times our youth and inexperience showed up, so we have to continue to learn and develop some more composure," Tabbert said. "However, we are making strides in just about every phase of the game so there are some things to feel good about."
The loss drops SD Mines to 1-17 on the season and 0-7 in the conference. Next up, the Hardrockers welcome Regis University to the King Center on Saturday in a 3 p.m. contest.
