Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. – The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team ran into a buzz saw Saturday night when the Lady Hardrockers took on Colorado Mines during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match in Golden, Colo. The Orediggers came away with a 3-0 victory.
Colorado Mines defeated the Hardrockers, 25-18, 25-7, 25-14. SD Mines ended the match with 24 kills while going 63-72 on the attack and collected 21 assists, 24 digs and three total blocks. The Orediggers posted 79-86 on the attack with 49 kills, 42 assists, 37 digs and six blocks.
"Despite the score, there were some positives," said Hardrocker head coach
Doug Tabbert. "We hit.423 in the first set against the best team in the conference and probably the biggest block we'll see all season. The second set was ugly and our defensive effort was as much to blame as anything. You can't give up unearned kills against a team with their offensive fire power, but we did just that. After that, we just didn't recover enough. They are nationally ranked for a reason and they certainly pose some challenges."
Individually for SD Mines, sophomore
Anna Breidt was 14-14 on the attack with six kills and junior
Emily Newton contributed with five kills and was 11-11 on the attack. Freshman
Allie Boggs posted 14 assists, and freshman
Allie Brown collected seven digs.
"We got some solid offensive contributions and they really defend," Tabbert said. "Emily hits .455, Anna hits .429, and Darla(Drenkhahn) helped us out even though she is playing out of position filling in on the outside.
Caryn Hazard showed what she is capable of as well, so we are developing offensively. We need more consistency in serve receive and in our defensive effort--those were our biggest issues tonight."
The loss drops SD Mines to 1-14 on the season and 0-6 in RMAC play. The Hardrockers are back in action Tuesday when they face Augustana University in a 6 p.m. bout. The AU Vikings will also challenge Black Hills State at 3:30 p.m. at the King Center in Rapid City.
