RAPID CITY, SD – South Dakota Mines fell 45-9 to (RV) Michigan Tech on Thursday night at O'Harra Stadium.
After the Hardrockers received the ball in the first half, the Huskies blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to get on the board first. South Dakota Mines could not get on the board in the first quarter as they trailed 14-0 after 15 minutes.
In the second quarter, the Huskies made it 21-0 with 14:10 left. The Hardrocker defense stood tall after that as they did not allow any more points in the quarter. To close out the half,
Sam Eccles made a 41-yard field goal to make the score 21-3 at halftime.
Michigan Tech had everything working in the third quarter as they put up 18 unanswered points to lead 39-3. The highlight play for South Dakota Mines in the third came when
Jadon Lemmons blocked an extra point try and returned it for 62 yards.
In the fourth, the Hardrockers were able to put up a touchdown.
Ty Harris set up a drive with his 48-yard kickoff return. After a two-yard run,
Ashur Carraha completed a pass to
Blake Borchers to put the Hardrockers at the 26-yard line.
Gunner Rohloff recorded the touchdown for the Hardrockers with his 18-yard run. That finalized the score as South Dakota Mines fell 45-9.
Freshman receiver
Jacoby Ogbonna led the team with six receptions for 61 yards.
Tobin Frost recorded 31 yards in the air for the Hardrockers. Quarterback
Gage Baker was 20-for-31 with 125 yards. On the defensive side,
Will Lester led the defense with 10 total tackles, seven of them being solo.
Levi Dickerson recorded 1.5 tackles for loss.
What's Next
The Hardrockers will go on the road for the next two weeks. They play at Upper Iowa on Sept. 13 at 1:30 p.m., followed by a contest at New Mexico Highlands on Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. They will be back home on Sept. 27 to face Fort Lewis at 2 p.m. for Homecoming.
