FAYETTE, Iowa – South Dakota Mines Football fell 58-14 at Upper Iowa to conclude their non-conference slate.
After the Peacocks scored on their first drive, the Hardrockers tied the game with a touchdown on their first drive. The drive included 11-straight pass attempts from Quarterback
Gage Baker, highlighted by a
Tobin Frost 18-yard catch.
Dawson Dunbar reeled in a five-yard catch to give South Dakota Mines a touchdown and tie the game at 7-7.
Upper Iowa scored on their next drive but failed a two-point conversion try. Deep in Peacock territory, Baker completed a 14-yard pass to
Jacoby Ogbonna for his first collegiate touchdown.
Sam Eccles made the extra point to make the score 14-13 in the first.
After that, it was all Peacocks. They scored another touchdown in the first quarter to take a 20-14 lead. In the second, Upper Iowa scored and forced a Hardrockers fumble. They forced a punt, a turnover on downs and another punt to end the half. The Peacocks went into halftime with a 44-14 lead.
To start the third quarter, the Hardrockers drove down the field, but Eccles missed a 52-yard field goal to give Upper Iowa the ball back. The Peacocks picked up another touchdown in the third to extend their lead to 51-14. The Peacocks had one more score to win the game 58-14.
Baker ended his night 30-for-48 with 261 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Joshua Morales led the team with 61 yards in the air. Ogbonna recorded seven catches for 55 yards and one touchdown. Dunbar reeled in five catches for 34 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively,
Charlie Johnson led the Hardrockers with his nine total tackles.
Lane Thomas recorded one tackle for loss and six total tackles.
Will Lester recorded a blocked punt in the fourth quarter.
What's Next
South Dakota Mines will stay on the road next week as they play at New Mexico Highlands on Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. They will return home for Homecoming against Fort Lewis on Sept. 27 at 2 p.m.
