RAPID CITY, S.D. – South Dakota Mines Football lost to (RV) Chadron State 10-35 in the Battle for the Eagle-Rock Trophy.
The Hardrockers received the ball first. In their first drive, they went all the way down to the Chadron State seven yard line.
Bryson Patten kicked a field goal to give South Dakota Mines a 3-0 lead. The Eagles answered with a touchdown on their first drive.
After South Dakota Mines forced a turnover on downs, they started a drive at their own 42 yard line. A 21 yard completion to
Blake Borchers put them at the 18 yard line,
Gage Baker rushed for a touchdown to make the score 10-7 at the beginning of the second quarter.
From there, it was all Chadron State for the rest of the game. They made it 14-10 and an interception deep in the Hardrockers zone increased their lead to 21-10.
Jarin Allen picked up an interception late in the second quarter, but the Hardrockers went into halftime down 10-21.
In the first drive of the second half,
Will Lester grabbed his first interception of the season. South Dakota Mines forced a turnover on downs at the end of the quarter as they still trailed 10-21 with 15 minutes remaining.
Logan O'Brien picked off Baker and returned it for a touchdown to make the score 28-10. With another touchdown later, the Eagles left Rapid City with a 35-10 victory over the Hardrockers.
Baker was 17-for-39 with 202 passing yards and one rushing touchdown.
Dawson Dunbar recorded 67 yards on the ground.
Joshua Morales led the Hardrockers with five receptions for 60 yards.
On the defensive side, Lester led the team with eight tackles. All eight of them were solo tackles. Lester and Allen both had an interception for South Dakota Mines.
Thomas Fields,
Nathan Kneubuhler and Lester all collected a tackle for loss.
Matthew Percival-Quolas forced a fumble.
With the loss, the Hardrockers dropped to 2-7 overall and 2-5 in the RMAC.
What's Next
South Dakota Mines will go on the road next week to face Colorado Mesa on Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. They return home to play Adams State on Nov. 15 for Senior Day and Native American Heritage.
