Volleyball Splits Home Weekend with New Mexico Highlands and Adams State

RAPID CITY, S.D. – South Dakota Mines Volleyball went 1-1 this weekend, highlighted by a 3-0 win over New Mexico Highlands on Friday.

Match 1: Hardrockers vs. New Mexico Highlands, 3-0 W

South Dakota Mines picked up a 3-0 sweep over New Mexico Highlands on Friday night at the King Center.

The Hardrockers won the first set 25-21. With a 10-16 deficit, the Hardrockers picked up eight points in nine attempts to go up 18-17. They went on a five-point run at the end of the set to win 25-21. In that run, Lexi Glendenning recorded three kills.
In the second set, South Dakota Mines dominated with a 25-15 win. With an 11-9 lead in hand, the Hardrockers recorded eight straight points to go up 19-9. The Cowgirls attempted a comeback until Ivy Vindivich closed it out with a kill.

New Mexico Highlands tried to force a fourth set, but the Hardrockers swept the Cowgirls with a 25-23 third set win. With a 16-10 lead in hand, the Cowgirls started to comeback as they went on an 8-2 run to go up 21-20. The Hardrockers recorded five of the last seven points to win 25-23.

Glendenning had a match to remember with 16 kills and a .419 hitting percentage. That marked a season-high hitting percentage. Vindivich picked up 10 kills, four digs and a .346 hitting percentage. Morgan Daugherty added seven kills for the Hardrockers. Hannah Benes collected 13 digs, while Louisa Battin led the setters with 18 assists. As a team, the Hardrockers recorde 46 kills, 38 digs and a .297 hitting percentage.

Match 2: Hardrockers vs. Adams State, 0-3 L

In their second matchup with Adams State this season, the Grizzlies topped the Hardrockers 3-0.

The Grizzlies won the first set 25-21. South Dakota Mines held a 13-12 lead until Adams State picked up six straight points to go up 18-13. The Hardrockers responded as they went on a run to tie the score at 18-18. However, Adams State closed it out with a 7-3 run to win 25-21.

In set two, the Grizzlies won 25-21 again. Adams State went out to a 19-11 lead due to a 9-2 run. The Hardrockers brought it back to a two-point deficit at 18-20. The Grizzlies picked up five of the last eight points, guiding them to a 25-21 win.

Adams State beat South Dakota Mines following a 25-20 set three victory. Once again, the Grizzlies went on a run in the middle of the set. With a 9-8 Hardrocker lead, the Grizzlies picked up eight points in nine tries. That lead carried them to a 25-20 win over the Hardrockers.

For the second straight night, Glendenning led the team in kills with 11. She had no errors to total a .367 hitting percentage. Daugherty recorded eight kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Maria Bouman had four blocks and four kills. Vindivich led the defense with 11 digs. Battin totaled 15 assists, while Hannah Joseph picked up 12.

With the 1-1 weekend, the Hardrockers moved to 5-13 overall and 3-5 in the RMAC. They have six RMAC contests left this season.

What's Next

South Dakota Mines will go on a five-game road trip, beginning next weekend at Regis on Oct. 24 and at Chadron State on Oct. 25. They will travel to Denver to play in the RMAC Power Pod on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The Hardrockers will face (RV) Colorado Mesa and #12 MSU Denver that weekend.
