Soccer Battles to Draw, Undefeated in RMAC Opening Weekend

RAPID CITY, S.D. – On Sunday afternoon, the South Dakota Mines men's soccer team played its second RMAC contest of the weekend at home in front of another good crowd as they took on traditional RMAC contender, Colorado Mesa at Dakota Fields.

For the second straight game, the Hardrockers had a flair for the dramatic as another late goal earned them a result.

In this one, Colorado Mesa grabbed a late first half goal after outshooting the Hardrockers 13-5 in the first half.

Early in the second half, the Mavericks had several opportunities but as he was throughout the match, Daniel Freitas was phenomenal in goal and stood on his head for much of the game, making 11 saves.

The Hardrockers calmed down, however, after the opening moments of the second half and earned a few opportunities for themselves as they finished the game with six shots on goal, including two by Hayden Jaramillo.

Jaramillo was key in tying the contest after Parker Yocom had a great run down the edge of the goal box and was fouled inside the box, earning a penalty for the Hardrockers.

It was senior captain Hayden Jaramillo set to take it. He lined it up and sent it low and right but not far enough as Diego Chavez got a hand on it only to see it bounce right back and Jaramillo found the net this time again on the bottom right, tying it up at one goal apiece in the 68th minute.

The two teams would each have opportunities down the stretch but couldn't capitalize as it was the Hardrockers who earned a back-to-back result in RMAC play to open the season.

Another pair of road games follow for South Dakota Mines as they take on Fort Lewis and Adams State on Friday and Sunday, Oct. 11 and 13 of next week.
