RAPID CITY, S.D. – The South Dakota Mines football team took on Black Hills State on Saturday night in the 139th edition of the Black Hills Brawl.
This one was a defensive battle as neither offense lit up the scoreboard, while there was a combined six turnovers.
Connor Taylor recorded eight points to pass the school record in points which was 222 as he currently sits at 226, however, it did not come in a victory as Black Hills State emerged with the win and left Rapid City with the Homestake Trophy after a 22-20 victory, sending the Hardrockers to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the RMAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hardrockers jumped on the board quickly, scoring on their first drive, going 71 yards in 11 plays to go up 7-0. After that, the offenses weren't able to do much, with Black Hills State getting a field goal to end the half.
BHSU would outscore the Hardrockers 10-3 in the third quarter to emerge with a 13-10 lead.
Early in the 4th,
Connor Taylor would set the new all-time points record for South Dakota Mines, connecting on a field goal to give him 225 points for his career. The field goal would tie the game at 13.
Another field goal from the Yellow Jackets gave them a 16-13 lead and a Hardrocker turnover would pave the way for them to go up 22-13.
Jake Martinelli found
Henry Dryden to give the Hardrockers another chance as they narrowed the deficit to 22-20, but it wouldn't be enough as the offense would turn it over one more time to clinch the BHSU victory.
