RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota Mines football team opened its season at home against Valley City State on Friday night.
The Hardrockers and Vikings battled through a first half, answering each other starting with
Jayden Johannsen finding
Ben Noland for a 10-yard score followed by a Valley City State touchdown. South Dakota Mines would then scored twice, first with a
Ty Harris run, then another Johannsen to Noland score, but Valley City State would cut it a little closer, 21-14 heading into the locker rooms.
That is the closest they would get however, as the Hardrocker defense tightened up, pitching a second half shutout, while the offense put 10 more points on the board to leave week one with. a victory.
Jayden Johannsen threw for 193 yards to go along with two scores. The top two running backs were effective with
Ty Harris going for 48 yards on 11 carries and
Jalen Frye going for 176 on 16 attempts. Each added a touchdown. On the receiving end,
Ben Noland hauled in nine passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns. South Dakota Mines intercepted three passes with
Hunter Newsom,
Kaleb Tischler and
Casey Knutsen each recording one.
The Hardrockers head for a tough contest next week at Truman State.
