SPEARFISH, S.D. --- The South Dakota Mines women's basketball team traveled up to Spearfish to take on Black Hills State in a non-conference matchup on Monday night in the Donald E. Young Event Center.
The Hardrockers would fall to the Yellow Jackets in their final tune-up prior to conference play beginning on Friday.
How it Happened
The Hardrockers started the game on top 4-3 on layups by
Madelyn Heiser and
Naomi Hidalgo. Black Hills State would gain the edge, taking a 10-6 lead halfway through the first quarter. South Dakota Mines' offense stalled and going into quarter #2, the Yellow Jackets held a 15-8 lead.
After not scoring in the first three minutes of the second quarter, the Hardrockers rattled off nine points to inch closer to the Yellowjackets. Close to the end of the half with 2:50 remaining, the Hardrockers trailed 25-17.
Piper Bauer hit a three to close the half as the Hardrockers trailed 27-20.
Morning Grace Spotted Bear led the Hardrockers in the first half with six points. Bauer added five for the Rockers.
To begin the second half, the Yellow Jackets had the momentum, outscoring SDM 10-5 through five minutes. At the 3:18 mark, Bauer would hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to nine 40-31. Later, South Dakota Mines would get things going, scoring nine unanswered to pull within three, 40-37. Outscoring Black Hills State in the third, the Hardrockers still trailed 42-38 heading to the fourth.
After Black Hills State expanded the lead, a three-pointer by
Alexis Backhaus with 6:45 to play brought the Hardrockers to within 6, 49-43. It wouldn't be enough, however, as the Yellow Jackets caught fire, going on a 10-0 run and eventually picking up the 64-45 win.

South Dakota Mines will be on the road this weekend traveling to Colorado to face off against the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs on Friday and Regis University on Saturday. The game on Friday will start at 5:30 PM while the game on Saturday will tip off at 3:00 PM.
