SPEARFISH, S.D. – The South Dakota Mines men's and women's track and field teams traveled to Spearfish, South Dakota, this weekend for the Black Hills State Yellow Jacket Open, held Saturday and Sunday at Lyle Hare Stadium.
The Hardrockers posted some impressive marks over the two-day event.
Jonathan Hopkins broke the school record in the men's Decathlon after the freshman earned second place with 5,910 points. The old record was held by Brad Ware who held it since 2016 with 5,672 points.
Westley Siebdrath also had a solid outing, taking first place in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 173-feet-8-inches and then grabbed fourth place in the discus with a distance of 131-7.
Ty Nickerson won the men's pole vault after clearing a height of 15-5 and teammate
Jared Wilson secured third place with a height of 14-7.25.
Joel Hass went the distance during the men's 10,000, taking top honors in a time of 32 minutes 4.18 seconds while teammate Tim Dunham was second (32:08.37) and
Theron Singleton grabbed third (35:48.23).
Other highlights on the men's side included: Corey Stone finished second in the 1,500 run (4:26.71;
Ryan Moen was runner up in the 5000 (15:46.78);
Adam Namyst took third in the 110 hurdles (15:48); the 4x100 relay team (
Steven Nolasco, Thomas Massa,
Cameron Kaku,
Caden Kokes) earned third place (46.29); and
Dakin Nolan finished third in the hammer throw (167-10).
On the women's side,
Macy McClure took top honors in the hammer throw with a distance of 159-4 while teammate
Jenna Sayler took third posting a 152-7. Sayler also finished fourth in the shot put (40-8.25).
In other Hardrocker women's highlights: the women's 4x100 relay team (
Katherine Mathieu,
Erica Keeble,
Vera Rust,
Kamryn Scully) took second (51.12); Rust was third in high jump (4-5); Scully finished second in the pole vault (11-1.75);
Tana Dahlberg grabbed third in the discus (119-1).
Next up, South Dakota Mines will travel to Kearney, Nebraska for the Central Nebraska Challenge on Saturday.
