RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota Mines women's basketball team fought in a close matchup with Northern State, but the wolves pulled away late to lead to the Hardrockers' 3
rd straight defeat.
The first quarter started with
Ryan Weiss making an impact, hitting an early three-pointer then assisting on a three-point shot hit by
Piper Bauer who would hit another one, giving the Hardrockers an 11-4 lead. Northern State would close out the first quarter on an 11-4 run, tying it at 15 going to the second quarter.
Again, in the second quarter, the Hardrockers started strong, scoring 9 of the first 12 points, to take a 24-18 lead with 7:42 to go in the first half. However, the Hardrocker offense would struggle for a big stretch going scoreless for a little over three minutes, in which the Wolves surged ahead 35-28 and took a 37-33 lead into the locker rooms.
In the third, each time continued to trade buckets as the Hardrocker would cut it four, and Northern State would bring it back to a 6-point lead. To end the third Northern State hit a basket to take a 6-point lead into the fourth quarter.
To start the fourth, Northern State had all of the momentum, surging to a 15-point lead before the Hardrockers would begin to fight back, cutting to 8 with just over a minute remaining, but there was not enough time left, as the Hardrockers fell 76-67.
