CANYON, Texas --- The South Dakota Mines Women's Basketball team played well for three quarters in their season opener against West Texas A&M, but that wasn't enough as they fell 70-53.
The first quarter started out well with true freshman
Piper Bauer scoring the first 5 points of the game. The Hardrockers would continue to play well throughout the first quarter, taking a 12-10 lead into the second.
The two teams traded leads to begin the second quarter with Bauer hitting back-to-back three's giving the Hardrockers some separation, leading 20-16. A free throw near the end of the half hit by
Bailey Johnson would give the Hardrockers a 29-26 lead to take into the locker room.
Bauer and
Madelyn Heiser scored early in the third, before a West Texas A&M run of 14-2 to end the quarter would give them a 47-35 lead.
Down 52-35 early in the fourth was too tall of a task as the Hardrockers fought but it was too much as they fell 70-53 in their season opener.
