Hardrockers Come Up Short vs. North Dakota Teams

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team closed out the Microtel and Travelodge Classic Saturday dropping two closed matches to former DAC-10 North Dakota foes, the University of Mary and Minot State.  

The Lady Hardrockers fell, 3-0, to the Mary Marauders and couldn't quite get over the hump in a competitive bout against the MSU Beavers, 3-1.

Despite falling to Mary, 3-0, the Hardrockers played each set down to the wire, but the Marauders escaped, 25-23, 25-21, 28-26.

SD Mines closed out the match hitting .286 percent with 37 kills on 97 attacks. They added 35 assists two aces, 38 digs and seven total blocks. U of M finished hitting .198 percent, tallied 47 kills on 116 attacks, notched 41 assists, 45 digs, 14 aces and four blocks.

Individually for the 'Rockers, freshman outside hitter Dana Thomson continues to shine in her college debut, leading the team with 19 kills on 34 attacks and was hitting .412 percent. Fellow freshman Shyann Bastian collected 31 assists, and both junior Makinze Maiden and senior Alye Wagner led the team with 10 digs each.

Against Minot State, the Beavers defeated SD Mines, 25-21, 24-23, 27-29, 25-18. The 'Rockers ended the match hitting .194 percent, tallied 54 kills on 165 attacks, came up with 52 assists, 63 digs and 16 total blocks. Minot had 64 kills on 162 attacks with .228 hitting percentage, posted 59 assists, 82 digs and 9 blocks.

Individually for SD Mines, Thomson had another outstanding performance with 23 kills on 58 attacks and managed a .293 hitting percentage. After four matched, the Fruita, Colorado, native has earned 81 kills in 16 sets and is averaging 5.06 kills a set to lead the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Senior Anna Breidt also performed with 12 kills and sophomore Lily Lundquist tacked on 10. Bastian notched 45 assists, and sophomore Tana Dahlberg came up with 20 digs.

Next up, the Hardrockers are off to Kearney Nebraska for the University of Kearney Fall Classic. SD Mines is slated to play UNC and a rematch with Minot on Friday followed by a matchup against Midwestern State and Newman University on Saturday.
