Hardrockers See Solid Competition On Day 1 Of UNK Classic

KEARNEY, Neb. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team traveled to Kearney, Nebraska, to compete in the Rosella Meier UNK Fall Classic – hosted by the University of Nebraska – Kearney.
 
The Lady Hardrockers ran into a buzz saw in their first match of the day as SD Mines fell short to the host institution UNK, 3-0. The Lopers defeated SD Mines, 25-21, 25-12, 25-12.

The Hardrockers were holding their own and took the first game the distance. With the set tied at 19-19, the home team was able to keep the 'Rockers at bay to take the game and kept up the momentum the rest of the way.
 
SD Mines finished the match with 30 kills, 114 attacks, 28 assists, 52 digs and seven total blocks. UNK closed out the match with 40 kills, 102 attacks and a .324 hitting percentage. They tallied 38 assists, 50 digs and 12 total blocks.
 
Individually for the 'Rockers, freshman Dana Thomson paced her team with 10 kills and seven digs while both senior Anna Breidt and junior Caryn Hazard both notched seven kills. Freshman setter Shyann Bastian posted 23 of the team's 28 assists. Senior Alye Wagner and sophomore Tana Dahlberg both came up with 11 digs for the 'Rockers while Breidt and sophomore Rayleigh Peterson both recorded two assisted blocks.
 
In the other Friday match for SD Mines, the Hardrockers were pitted against Minot State in a rematch of last weekend. The Beavers were able to stave off the Hardrockers' pressure to win, 3-0. MSU defeated the Hardrockers, 25-20, 25-14, 25-17.
 
SD Mines came away from the bout with 36 kills on 123 attacks, tallied 34 assists, 46 digs and three blocks. The Beavers managed 39 kills on 98 attacks, with 36 assists, 54 digs and 14 total blocks.
 
Individually, the 'Rockers were again led by Thomson, who had a match high 17 kills with 38 attacks and a .289 hitting percentage to go along with her 13 digs to lead the team. Hazard added six kills on 21 attacks and junior Hannah Stevenson contributed with five kills. Bastian posted 21 assists and Dahlberg tacked on 11 digs.
