Lady 'Rockers Fall Short To Regis Rangers In RMAC Battle

DENVER, Colo. --- A slow start to the first and third quarters by the South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team Friday night proved to be the difference Friday night as the Lady Hardrockers fell to the Regis University Rangers, 62-49, during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup in Denver, Colo.

The Rangers mounted an 11-point edge after the first 10 minutes of the game, 19-8, but SD Mines opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run to erase the deficit. Over the second 10 minutes of play, the visitors outscored Regis, 22-12, and went into halftime down by just one point, 31-30.

As the third period opened, SD Mines again went cold from the field as the Lady Ranges broke loose, outscoring the Lady 'Rockers, 18-7, and went into the final frame up, 49-37. The home team put up 13 points in the fourth quarter to 12 from SD Mines.

The Hardrockers shot just 35.3 percent from the field Friday, converting 18-51 shots and were just 4-22 from the three-point line for 18.2 percent. SD Mines connected on 9-12 from the free throw line and grabbed 28 rebounds, eight assists, four steals and two steals.

Regis finished the game shooting 46.9 percent from the field hitting 23-49 attempts, including a 4-14 performance from the three-point line. The Rangers made good on 12-14 on free throws, grabbed 33 rebounds, 14 assists, seven steals and four blocked shots.

Individually for the 'Rockers, sophomore Anna Haugen paced her team with 12 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Fellow sophomore Cooper Courtney added 11 points, earning eight markers at the free throw line. Sophomore Sami Steffeck contributed with nine points and junior Taylor Molstad tacked on eight.

Regis was led in scoring by Whitney Jacobs with 13 points and Shelby Espinosa added 12.

The Hardrockers fall to 16-11 on the season and 11-10 in conference play and will end the regular season Saturday in Nebraska, taking on Chadron State in 5:30 p.m. game.
