CHADRON, Neb. --- With the score tied seven times and 10 different lead changes, it was a rough and scrappy battle for the South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team as they dropped a heartbreaker in overtime, 70-67, to Chadron State College, Saturday night in Chadron, Neb., during the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season finale.
It was a fight to the bitter end, as SD Mines trailed by six points with less than 30 second left in the extra period. After SD Mines junior
Taylor Molstad drained a three with about 15 seconds to go, the Hardrocker defense turned up the juice, caused a turnover and set the visitors up for one last opportunity to tie the game, but unfortunately a contested three-point attempt rimmed in and out as time expired.
Points were hard to come by in the game. SD Mines took a two-point edge after the first quarter, 13-11, and then bettered the home team, 16-14, over the second 10 minutes, to go into halftime up by four, 29-25.
In the third period, Chadron came out strong, going on an 8-0 run and outscored the Lady 'Rockers, 13-10, heading into the fourth quarter.
The Hardrockers trailed by five points down the stretch, but thanks to some solid defense and a pair of clutch free throws from sophomore
Cooper Courtney with six seconds left in regulation, SD Mines was able to tie the game and set up the dramatic finish.
SD Mines finished the game shooting 30.4 percent from the field hitting 21-69 attempts. The 'Rockers went 7-29 from the behind the arc to shoot 24.1 percent. They added 18-22 from the free throw line, came down with 42 rebounds, had nine assists, 11 steals and four blocked shots.
Chadron finished shooting 39.7 percent from the field, making good on 27-68 buckets, including a 5-18 performance from three-point range and were 11-17 on free throws. They added 46 rebounds, 18 assists, four steals and four blocked shots.
Individually for SD Mines, sophomores
Sami Steffeck and
Cooper Courtney both cashed in for 16 points. Steffeck added eight rebounds. Junior
Taylor Molstad and freshman
Ryan Weiss each tacked on 10 markers while sophomore
Anna Haugen contributed with eight points.
The Eagles were led in scoring by Kali Feddersen with 21 points, Taryn Foxen added 17 and Leticia Rodriguez posted 12.
With the loss, the Hardrockers close out the regular season with a 16-12 overall record and 11-11 mark in the RMAC. SD Mines owns the No. 8 seed in the RMAC Shootout post-season tournament and will travel to No. 1 CSU-Pueblo in Pueblo, Colo. Times are to be announced.
